East of India’s story began in 1991, when owners John Ayris and Anne Spratling were travelling through Asia and met a talented man selling beautiful, handmade items. The pair bought the items and the gifts were so well received by friends and family, and the demand so great that they decided to start their own business introducing these beautiful homemade gifts to the UK – and East of India was born!

Today, with 20 years of invaluable experience behind them, John Ayris and Anne Spratling are still at the heart of the company, offering enthusiasm and their vast experience to their skilled design team. East of India’s mantra continues and all products are made with love and care at their studio and head office in Folkestone. East of India maintain their close relationship with those original Artisan’s, supporting them and their families they are still able to earn a living using traditional skills passed down through generations. Their specialist skills give East of India products a distinct, unique quality which are loved by customers all over the UK, Europe and beyond…

There’s good news for the environment too, as for a number of years East of India has been involved with a tree-planting project in Indonesia. This means that wood used to create today’s East of India products, was a seedling planted a decade ago. When each tree is harvested, it is replaced with another, continuing this sustainable and environmentally friendly production chain.
