To keep with the Halloween spirit, this weeks blog is to give you some inspiration on pumpkin carving designs!
Pumpkin carving is a very traditional Halloween activity which the whole family can get involved in. It is believed that pumpkin carving originally began in Ireland. The origin of carving pumpkins comes from an old tale of Stingy Jack. The story goes that Stingy Jack tried to trick the devil for his own gain, which resulted in him not being allowed into Heaven or Hell when he died. Because of this he was sentenced to walk earth for the whole of eternity. Back in the day, people in Ireland started carving demonic faces in turnips to scare away Stingy Jack and his soul. Now, you may be thinking, if it started with turnips then how did the pumpkin get involved? When Irish immigrants moved to the United States of America they wanted to carry on the tradition of carving these faces to scare away Stingy Jack, however there wasn't many turnips in the United States. Instead they used pumpkins as they were well known and easy accessible in that region.
If you want to delve deeper, the Halloween season actually comes from a Celtic festival called Samhain. This festival celebrated the end of summer and the beginning of November. A very old tradition in Samhain was to disguise yourself so that you would be hidden from souls wandering the earth, this was very similar to the story of Stingy Jack, hence why pumpkin carving was incorporated into the Halloween season, clever hey!
