Halloween is almost here and that means the ghosts, goblins, princesses and ninjas will be prowling the neighbourhood looking for treats of all kinds. While Halloween is considered a children’s holiday, there are many adults who celebrate and join in on the fun as well.
If you are one of the Halloween faithful and you decorate your home with all of the scary fun this holiday brings with it, keep reading and learn more about the history of Halloween and what Halloween means to us here at Mollie & Fred!
The History Of Halloween
Celebrated every year on 31 October, Halloween’s history began with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Samhain was less about trick or treating and more about lighting bonfires to ward off evil. The festival was soon modernised by Pope Gregory III in the 8th century when he designated 1 November as a time to honour all saints, or All Saints Day. He incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain and named the evening before All Saints Day as All Hallows Eve, which later became Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into what we know it as today with the costumes, the trick-or-treating and the carving of jack-o-lanterns.
