No matter where you are, snow globes are a classic decoration which we all know and love. Whether you collect them, gift them, or simply have a couple to adorn your home with, we can guarantee that you have one somewhere! But where did these lovely little ornaments come from? And why are they so popular? Read this blog post to find out all about the history of snow globes, and why they are a world wide favourite.
When researching about the history of snow globes, it's difficult to find out much about very early years. However; one of the earliest records of the beloved snow globe is from the end of the 19th century. These very early dates come from France and depict a report which talks about the 1878 Paris Universal Exposition. Reports state that a glassware company exhibited a range of  “paper weights of hollow balls filled with water, containing a man with an umbrella.” They also stated that these objects  contained white powder that fell “in imitation of a snow storm”
This early report is a very interesting piece of factual information that really paints the picture of where snow globes came from, or where they were first seen. However, if you want to know who was known as the first inventor of the snow globe, a man by the name of ' Erwin Perzy' will come up. Whilst living outside of Vienna, Erwin ran a medical instrument supply business. It was here that a local surgeon asked Erwin to try and improve the house hold item of the light bulb. Erwin tried to experiment with a variety of different things which would turn the light bulb brighter, this included filling a globe with water and sprinkling bits of glitter inside of it. He then placed the globe in front of a candle to see if this would magnify the globes glitter, however the glitter fell too quickly so this was a fail in his eyes. Erwin tried different materials in the globe, and quickly discovered that the pieces of objects floating reminded him of falling snow. And there the snow globe, or " Schneekugel" was born. This new item that was ever so loved by locals, became extremely popular, and by 1905 Erwin was making dozens of snow globes.
