What is valentine’s day?
Valentine’s day is a day where we celebrate the ones who we are in love with, by giving them cards and gifts. Spending quality time together on days out, dates or just quiet days in together.
Legend of Valentine’s day
One legend argues that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than individuals with wives and families, he prohibited marriage for young men. Valentine, realising the injustice of the law, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young couples in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death.
In jail is where he fell in love with the jailer's daughter and when he was taken to be killed on 14 February, he sent her a love letter signed "from your Valentine".
How to celebrate during lockdown?
Dress up, get fancy for your evening in together. Make it a special date night, by now you’ve been too used to seeing one another in loungewear or pj’s which isn’t particularly exciting. Get fancy and make the most of your quality time together.
Making a meal together is a really nice time to have a chat and just catch up, separate from the working week, have some alcohol, and just appreciate the day. Or splash out on your favourite takeout, maybe support a local business as well.
Order some decoration to make your home feel a little different, a maybe a little less like home. Try making your house feel a little more formal like a restaurant with candles, table runners and the expensive glassware that never leaves the cupboard, or a snug hideaway with cushions galore, a projector and fairy lights.
Move to a different room than normal and ditch the technology. The amount of evenings I’m glued to my phone and find I have wasted an entire evening, which is not what you want for Valentine’s Day. Or the countless times waisted trying to find the perfect box set or film to watch and then end up giving up.
Set up a home bar, make your own cocktails at home trial and error to be warned or get a cocktail recipe book. Have the evening drinks without the taxi fare.
Galantines Day?
On February 11, 2010, the TV sitcom Parks and Recreation released an episode called ‘Galentine’s Day’. The lead character explained the made-up holiday, Galentine’s Day: “Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style.” The word galentine itself blends gal and valentine. Since the episode, Galentine’s Day expanded into the larger society. Some actual Galentine’s Day celebrations involve getting together with friends to exchange small gifts and eat brunch.
